Our analytical services department has experience of handling a variety of liquid and solid sample types and offers microbial, chemical and elemental analysis.
For example we offer a suite of commonly requested analytical tests for industrial effluents and are also equipped to handle low specific activity (LSA) scale and undertake mass spectrometry.
Our analytical laboratories in Aberdeen are equipped with a Thermo Scientific iCAP mass spectrometer for metals testing of substances such as waste materials, oilfield scales, sediments, soils and compost. Commonly requested analyses include barium testing of sediments, mercury, zinc and iron analysis.
We undertake ecotoxicity testing of industrial effluents, leachates, ballast waters, soil from brownfield construction sites and extracts of particulate wastes prior to disposal.
NCIMB is licensed by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and operates a well-established quality management system certified to ISO 9001.
We can also source and manage additional services where required in order to deliver a comprehensive, bespoke, one-stop-shop waste and effluent testing package.
Analytical services case study: lifeboat fuel testing
High water content, high particulate content and microbial proliferation in fuel and fuel components can cause serious problems such as under-performance of machinery due to reduced burning efficiency, filter clogging and microbially influenced corrosion. NCIMB offers quality assured analysis of fuel and fuel components to nationally recognised standards to aid in the monitoring of fuel quality and problem-solving for our clients.
A diesel sample that we received from the fuel tank of a North Sea lifeboat emphasised just how important microbial monitoring of fuel tanks can be. In a vessel such as a lifeboat, which is not in use on a daily basis, conditions within the fuel tank could prove ideal for microbial growth. Severe contamination could lead to engine failure, and so early identification of bacteria, allowing remedial action to be taken, could be life saving.
Analytical services case study: disposal of particulate waste
Disposal of particulate waste can result in the production of toxic leachates from waste disposal sites. At NCIMB we used our MARA and LumiMARA ecotoxicology tests to undertake whole effluent assessment of aqueous extracts prepared from particulate industrial waste. The results indicated that, in this particular case there would be a low risk associated with disposal of the waste to landfill.
Analytical case study: offshore decommissioning suite
Decommissioning of offshore production platforms presents a major engineering challenge, and protection of the environment is a key aspect of decommissioning operations. Many North Sea platforms have been in place for decades, and during that time regulation of wastes associated with the oil and gas industry has changed considerably. NCIMB provides a decommissioning suite of microbiological, elemental, ecotoxicological and chemical analysis, including alpha and gamma spectroscopy, on historical accumulations and other substances that may potentially be released to the environment during the decommissioning process.
