The scientific names of bacteria listed are in accordance with the presently accepted nomenclature in bacteriology. Names are valid only when listed in the "Approved Lists of Bacterial Names" (Skerman et al. 1989, American Society for Microbiology, Washington DC ISBN 1-55581-014-4) as indicated by AL . Alternatively, they may have been validly published since then by an original publication in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology - IJSEM (formerly the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology), or published elsewhere and subsequently cited in the lists of "Validation of the Publication of New Names and New Combinations Previously Effectively Published Outside the IJSEM"*. All other names should be considered as invalid and are listed in the catalogue in quotation marks.

Due to the fact that bacterial taxonomy is in a constant state of flux and that invalid names, and validly published synonyms still circulate in the literature, a high degree of cross referencing is maintained in the current catalogue to facilitate ease of search for users. (* Such organisms are superscript"VP".)

Arrangement of Strain Data

Example: a Staphylococcus aureus subsp aureus AL. b * c 13062 ( d S33 R4 ATCC 12600 CCM 885 IAM 12544 NCTC 8532 RH2606) e NCTC -- S.T. Cowan / f Pleural fluid/g (1 37C).

a. Scientific (genus/species/sub-species) name. AL signifies this strain has been validly published and appears on the "Approved Lists of Bacterial Names".

b. Asterisk denotes a type strain.

c. NCIMB numerical citation/collection number.

d. Strain number, followed by alternative culture collection listings for the same strain (see abbreviations section for a list of collection acronyms).

e. History. In this case, S.T. Cowan deposited this organism in the NCTC who in turn passed it onto NCIMB.

f. Source of isolate.

g. Growth conditions (medium and growth/incubation temperature).
