NCIMB is delighted to be a sponsor of the 8th International Symposium on Applied Microbiology and Molecular Biology in Oil Systems. There’s a great programme lined up for this year’s event, which will be held online from the 8 – 11 June. It goes beyond the traditional oil and gas industry focus to include sessions on alternative fuels to oil and gas, hydrocarbon biodegradation and becoming net zero.
Of course there is still a strong focus on microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) and reservoir souring – including a session on the oil and gas microbiome – problems and solutions. The human microbiome has been the subject of many news stories recently, as scientists learn more about all the different ways in which it can impact our health. But it is not just human health that could benefit from microbiome research. Developments in sequencing technology have resulted in a much greater understanding of environmental microbiology – all kinds of environments have a microbiome and improved understanding of it could pave the way to tackling many issues.
NCIMB has been working alongside the oil and gas industry, helping them to monitor populations of microorganisms in for many years, so we are looking forward to hearing about the latest research!
