Since we haven’t done much travelling recently, we’re going to take a journey around the world in 80 strains, following the route of Phileas Fogg in the novel “Around the World in 80 Days”. New Acetogen added to the NCIMB culture collection

An acetogen capable of fermenting carbon monoxide and producing alcohols has been recently added to the NCIMB culture collection. The use of acetogenic bacteria for the fermentation of syngas to biofuels has been a topic of interest for researchers in recent years, as the need to move away from fossil fuel dependence intensifies. New Acinetobacter strain available from NCIMB

Recent additions to the National Collection of Industrial, Food and Marine Bacteria include an Acinetobacter type strain. NCIMB 15260 Acinetobacter kanungoii (PS-1) was isolated from a fresh water fish from the Mahanadi River in central India, and deposited by the Institute of Life Sciences, a research institute in Bhubaneswar, India. This strain is one of 106 Acinetobacter strains in the NCIMB culture collection. Two new methanotrophs added to the NCIMB collection

Two new methanotroph strains have been added to the National Collection of Industrial, Marine and Food Bacteria. The strains were deposited by the Biodiscovery Institute in Nottingham. In a recently published paper describing their isolation and characterisation, the authors highlight that by using methane gas as a carbon source and accumulating the carbon as the biodegradable plastic polymer poly-3-hydroxybutrate, methanotrophs may hold the key to simultaneously tackling two major environmental issues – waste plastic, and emissions of methane, the second most abundant greenhouse gas.
