Corrosion is generally thought of as a chemical process – so what have bacteria got to do with it? NCIMB’s Energy and Environmental Microbiology Services Manger, Michelle Robertson, gives an introduction to Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion and some methods used for monitoring the organisms involved. Microorganisms are ubiquitous, occurring in all kinds of environments and they can quickly colonise the surfaces of man made structures, forming biofilms. Biofilms can be highly complex communities of different species with the early colonizers creating the conditions that allow others to follow, but the composition …

NCIMB’s oilfield media and LumiMARA ecotoxicity test to be showcased at IPTC
NCIMB news 11 Feb 2024 We are delighted to be a part of the International Petroleum Technology Conference in Kuala Lumpur which takes place 18 – 20 February 2025. We will be represented by our Malaysian distributors dp Fluiteq on Booth J205. Visitors to the stand will be able to learn more about our range of oilfield microbiology media, and our multi-species ecotoxicity assay, LumiMARA. NCIMB offers a full range of commonly required oilfield microbiology media and can prepare bespoke formulations to order. The range includes media formulations from the …
NCIMB grows overseas sales with new Malaysian and Asia Pacific distributor dP Fluiteq
Aberdeen-based oilfield microbiology experts NCIMB Ltd have entered into an exclusive distributor agreement with dP Fluiteq for distribution of their bacterial growth media in Malaysia and Asia Pacific. The media is used in the oil and gas industry to assess the risk of microbiologically influenced corrosion in production facilities. This form of corrosion can contribute to failure of pipelines, and the presence and activity of microorganisms can also cause other issues in oilfield systems. NCIMB is a biotechnology company with decades of experience in making media suitable for culturing bacteria …
Visit from integrity monitoring partners ICR
We were delighted to welcome our corrosion monitoring partners from ICR to our new purpose-built facility last week! NCIMB partners with ICR in the delivery of full microbiological and corrosion monitoring surveys of oil and gas production facilities. Microbial monitoring is an essential step towards safeguarding assets against the effects of microbiologically influenced corrosion. You can find more information about all our oilfield microbiology services here
ICorr Corrosion Forum
Our consultant microbiologist Dr Carol Devine attended the ICorr Aberdeen Branch corrosion forum at the end of August. The theme of the event was energy transition and corrosion, and material challenges associated with the energy transition. Topics covered included corrosion issues arising during hydrogen transport, and with offshore wind, fusion reactors and solar energy. As we transition our energy supply away from oil and gas it is essential that corrosion challenges – including microbiologically influenced corrosion – are fully considered so that monitoring is effective and preventative action can be taken. We …
