Our Board
NCIMB's is governed by a board of directors with a wealth of industry experience and microbiology knowledge.

Barry Philpott
Barry has an 18-year tenure with NCIMB, joining in 2005 as CEO and angel investor, and serving since 2010 as Chairman. He has over 40 years senior management and board experience in the life sciences and CRO sectors and is founder of a CRO specialising in infectious diseases. Previous posts have included non-exec chairman of eCRO Cmed and president of Boston-based CRO PAREXEL International. Barry's early career was in scientific instruments with EG&G, now Perken Elemr, and he studied chemical engineering at Imperial College of Science & Technology, London University.

Dr Edward Green
Edward is a microbiologist with expertise in engineering biology. He has founded two biotechnology companies, and built the first, Green Biologics, into a world leader for butanol fermentation before founding CHAIN Biotech, a microbiome company focussed on development and commercialisation of live biotherapeutics. Edward obtained his PhD in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and is a member of the Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Forum as well as chairing the BIA Engineering Biology Advisory Committee.

Dr Carol Phillips
Carol stepped down as NCIMB's CEO in 2022, having joined the company in 2008. Prior to this, she undertook postdoctoral research into microbial ecology at Aberdeen and Michigan State Universities, before working on commercialisation of research activity at Heriot Watt University and NAFC Marine Centre. Her PhD was undertaken at Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory (now SAMS) and University of Dundee. Carol has maintained close links with SAMS, sitting on various committees and the board of SRSL ltd. She has an MBA from Heriot Watt University.

Prof James Prosser
James Prosser is Emeritus Professor in Environmental Microbiology at the University of Aberdeen. Before taking up a lectureship in Aberdeen, Jim carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Liverpool, where he also gained his PhD. His research focuses on the ecophysiology, diversity and ecosystem function of soil microorganisms. Jim is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal Society of Biology and the American Academy of Microbiology. He was awarded an OBE for services to Environmental Science.
