NCIMB’s oilfield media and LumiMARA ecotoxicity test to be showcased at IPTC

NCIMB news 11 Feb 2024

We are delighted to be a part of the International Petroleum Technology Conference in Kuala Lumpur which takes place 18 – 20 February 2025. We will be represented by our Malaysian distributors dp Fluiteq on Booth J205. Visitors to the stand will be able to learn more about our range of oilfield microbiology media, and our multi-species ecotoxicity assay, LumiMARA.

NCIMB offers a full range of commonly required oilfield microbiology media and can prepare bespoke formulations to order. The range includes media formulations from the internationally recognised NACE standard TMO194-2014, as well as our own recipes. All batches of our media are rigorously tested before release, so you can be confident of its quality. If you aren’t able to visit the dpFluiteq booth at IPTC you can find out more by visiting our speciality media page.

Our LumiMARA ecotoxicity test can be used as part of a risk-based approach for the management of produced water in offshore oil and gas installations. Oilfield produced water is a global environmental issue as it contains toxic substances and is produced in high volumes, governments often set regulations requiring treatment of produced waters prior to their discharge at sea.

Compliance with limits can be demonstrated by measuring specified components of produced water such as dispersed hydrocarbons. However, produced water is a complex effluent containing unknown substances. So reliance on measurement of known substances in produced water may not accurately reflect environmental risk of discharge.

Whole effluent assessment is a risk-based approach that assesses the response of living things to the effluent rather than relying on measuring single substances within it.

Bacteria can be used for whole effluent assessment and NCIMB’s LumiMARA assay is an ecotoxicity test that includes 11 different strains of bacteria that have been isolated from marine and freshwater environments.

If you aren’t able to visit booth J205 at IPTC, you can find out more on our ecotoxicity testing pages.
